PMD: Personal Microderm Microdermabrasion Device #Review

DSC_0828

The new year means I am keeping with the trend of trying at home beauty related devices, to see if they deliver better results. I have tried so far laser and a glass unit that was more cumbersome as time went on. So far, laser has been the technology that I feel has delivered visible results at a lower price point than what you get at a spa facility or even out of several jars of beauty creams!

DSC_0829

My new unit is from PMD, a company that makes several Microdermabrasion devices and also has a skincare line. I have seen these units at Ulta, Sephora to even Costco. At Costco, the PMD representative allowed me to handle the unit and see how it worked, which is always a plus because the other beauty stores have the unit as an “on-line only” purchase. I noticed the unit was easy to handle, ergonomic in shape, which made it easy to maneuver and even though the abrasion technology used has a spinning motion, the unit did not vibrate so much that it made it awkward to hold. The technology used makes sure the user is able to just focus on the skin, versus a device that sometimes can be unwieldy. So, I had already a positive mindset when it came to using PMD tools. My only question was, does it work? Will I see a difference that justifies ownership and investing in refills?  Hey, I get upset when fragrance refills get changed and I they expect me to buy all new units!

DSC_0830

I did not want this to be like printers of the past, where the ink makes you never, ever want to print in color and only printing in “fast-econo mode” when you print anything else, because a refill breaks the bank. Not bringing in another machine into this house that makes me feel guilty for using it! I first looked at refills and that fear was easily put to rest. Each disc is easily differentiated by a color coding system:

The cost was something I had to do a double-take because it was actually (dislike using this word) cheap, so let us say cost effective :). I know. I wanted an excuse before the unit was out of the box to convince myself that exfoliating was something that I was doing fine with by using a mask and/or scrub. Six individual refills costs $20.00. Okay, but what does that bring to the table? Well, one disc has a lifespan of 3 to 4 treatments. You do one treatment a week……..well, this is actually cheaper than my scrub that I use every 3 days, not counting the daily one! What the heck! I had to redo the math and somehow PMD found a way to not “get you” with the refills like so many other companies tend to do. This is why I do not use my facial scrubber machine because I do not want to kill the rechargeable battery and/or buy another refill. In the end, I am trying to make my face scrubber last longer by not using it! Yeah, no logic in that!

Retail Price Point: The starting price for PMD tools (units) start at $159.00 and go as high as $199.00.  Visit here to compare the devices and the differences, plus see what tools suites your needs best.

So, I am past the refill fear and get this, this device requires no charging or batteries. As I was reading the manual, I plugged in the device thinking I would get somewhere in the manual while reading it, where it would state how long to charge for, or unplug when whatever light turns green. I had a laughing moment when I read you just plug it in and go. Okay, PMD……you are making me like you!

Verdict:
It all comes down to results. Is PMD going to give my skin same like results that I can’t achieve cheaper via another method. This is how I break down what products stay and what products go in our home. It’s all about what they bring to the table. PMD discs use aluminium oxide crystals and I started really reading about the material and what it can do. The aluminum oxide crystals are hypoallergenic, so already a plus because there is no chemical or ingredient like in a scrub that may irritate the skin. So, that already takes that worry out of the equation and also no beads that are not only harmful to the environment but also plumbing. The ability for the disc to not grow or spread bacteria is important, because when we exfoliate or do Microdermabrasion procedures at home, we are causing the skin to open (i.e. minor damage) in order for it to heal and resurface a new layer of skin that has a better appearance. You are not going to yield great results if a product has fragrance or welcomes bacteria to the party! There is no scrubbing here, the device just glides (once over each section of the skin) and does all the work. The user is key and that means be mindful that you pass only once over each treated area and the PMD device does all the work. This unit can also be used for the face and body, and again easy as the discs clearly tell you what and where they can be used. I like having that option and choice!  The PMD device also helps circulation, so your skin will increase collagen production and help the skin look plumper and healthier over time.  So, this is more than just discs removing dead skin, this is a total skincare system!

Final Verdict:
I did as instructed and removed all products that could irritate or really were being replaced by what PMD’s system does for you. Check! No retinol, no acids, no peels, no anything and just allowing PMD be what my skin depends on and getting use to the idea of only using this unit once a week and nothing in between but a good moisturizing regimen to pick up the rest. Doing less in the beauty world is always welcoming but when you have habits and someone tells you do this once a week and you will be more better than fine, like your skin will look and feel better…….well, you get suspicious (or at least I do). I had a few bumps from using a new hair spray, which were beginning to sort of emerge but not fully on the sides of my forehead. I did the PMD treatment and I was done quickly after doing my practice run a few days before that only made sure I got the hang of it, but that I would not experience irritation. I just softly pulled my skin taught where needed and the PMD device did all the work. I was finished with my face in 5 to 7 minutes. No masks or peels take that little time and it was odd not worrying about cracking a mud mask by laughing and not talking for 20 to 25 minutes. The feeling on my face felt like when I do an aspirin mask, that fresh and clean feeling but not over dry. Day three, my pimples submerge. Like with any beauty treatment, this is something I brought to the party and I wanted to see how PMD would deal with it. Hey, I get breakouts here and there and I need a system that knows this and not have a rule that my face has to be 100% clear to use it because it might as well go hang out with the face scrubber! Week two comes by, and my pimples never fully went all angry on me. I always get 2 or 3 when they come out what I call in “island formation” that are going to be pests. No pests and I did not pick (man, that was hard), but I did not want to pick at my face and blame PMD for the ouch. Again, I do another treatment and you can see my skin gets a little red but within one hour the redness is gone and I do the treatment at night.  This is something I always did to allow my skin to calm down. My pimples do not get white heads or clog up. You know how when a pimple pops but then wants to do it again 3 days later (when it gathered more bacteria making buddies)? That did not happen. Healing happened. They did not over peel as I stayed away from anything that would hurry the turn-over process up and cause irritation to the “good skin”. Then I noticed when entering week three, that the pimples I had in week one is all the pimples I have dealt with. The non-pimpled skin is smoother and softer, but remains pimple free. My skin is not missing the daily scrub, masks, peels, and you name it. I then noticed when ending week three that my skin has improved dramatically. I took pictures and I have no scars I will have to work with. Just little peeling skin where the pimple was but no pimple revisiting and I just used one disc to do all this. One disc, only once a week and no battery to charge! That means my one disc costs about $3.50 ($3.33 to be exact) and that is all it took for almost a month’s worth of treatments. This is also the disc price with no coupons as PMD advertises on the site discounts to add that usually take 20% to 25% off, so the deal can be sweetened! The sweeter part is my face. I love it! Scars do come off on me from acne because I thankfully do not get deep ones but it takes 2 months to lighten them up to the point you can’t see them. The PMD device made sure not only did I not develop scar making marks (blemishes, zits, blackheads, white heads, pimples, bumps of unknown origin, ect.) but started to race up my healing periods. I am done with scrubs that tend to over dry my skin and the discs PMD offers means I can just change discs as the weather changes because this means my skin is more sensitive in the Winter months when it is cold. No new scrub I need to get that then will rot under the sink until I need it again 1 year later! The PMD works with your skin, not you needing to work for it!

Swiss Ultimate Labs: Swiss Ultimate Sonic-Ionic Infusion Wand #Review #SwissBeauty

IMAG3093

I was able to try the mini-me version of Swiss Ultimate Lab’s under-eye massager and now I get to try the larger size.

This Swiss Ultimate Labs Sonic Ionic Infusion wand is more than double the size and that means it lends itself to use in other areas and I found this wand had more power, even though the wand uses the same battery power (one AAA battery). The battery is included with this wand too! The wand is advertised as providing Ultrasonic therapy and Negative-ion; micro-electric pulses. That is delivering up to 170 sonic beats per second where applied. The game is to increase collagen production by driving water (moisture) to the skin’s surface. That is what minimizes and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You will see on the first treatment a temporary improvement that is visible and you can feel a smoother’s skin surface. Over time the idea is that you make this the state of your skin, meaning it gets use to being plump, nourished, and minimizing the fine lines/wrinkles you may have.  You aid this process by providing skincare products to the surface and so forth.

Retail Price Point: $13.87 via Amazon for one wand

IMAG3092

Directions: The product comes with directions but they are not written very well. You simply apply any skincare product for that area (i.e. eye serum for the eye area, anti-aging creams, ect.) and then treat each area for 30 seconds. This does not mean you stay stationary in one place but more like 30 seconds under one eye and when that lapses, you then treat the other eye for 30 seconds and so forth.

Verdict:
I tried the little version like I mentioned and that one came with a cap to put over the contact tip after use, while this one did not and came in a box that is more for featuring, versus storing. That is the only small negative I could find because the rest was positive. The wand delivers pulses at a greater speed and I treated everything from my under-eye area, the middle of my eyebrows to my forehead. The wand was easier to hold and navigate and more speedy pulses were present. I have been using this wand for 2.5 weeks because I could not use it in conjunction with the other one, in order to know what benefits belonged to which wand. The manufacture states you will see benefits in 4-6 weeks and I can state I have already and I’m happy with a device that only needs a battery and is not invasive, like shots would be. I don’t even feel needles, so that is never my concern but what is in the tube and the possible side effects is a risk at this moment I do not want to take. As a skincare maintenance wand, this one fits the bill perfectly in performance and cost.

Swiss Ultimate Labs: Swiss Ultimate Eye Serum with Sonic-Infusion Skincare Wand #Review #SwissUltimate

IMAG2885

I have used many beauty treatments and have started to get curious about devices, lasers to even light technology. So much information out there but I am semi-familiar when it comes to wands. Years back (2012), L’Oreal released a similar device, which vibrated and helped distribute a eye serum. The unit had the vibrator on one end and the tube on the other. It was a nice unit that was easy to store and even travel with. I finally ran out of the serum but I kept the device end and would occasionally use it. Since, this unit and skincare combo was similar, I figured I give it a try and see how this unit performed.

IMAG2883

  • Swiss Ultimate Labs Eye Serum:

Not like any other dispensing unit I have ever used and I wish knowing about this now, that more beauty products pick-up this trend. The eye serum is pre-measured and the dispenser has a turn and click mechanism, that dispenses enough product to use on both eyes. You just push down on one end, and the unit will deliver the same amount of serum every time. You can also only push the part that allows the dispensing to begin at the half-way point, and you get a lesser portion. You are in complete control and no waste! The serum never comes in contact with copious amount of air like products stored in jars and the tip is easy to keep clean and keep sanitized. No worries of bacteria coming in contact, plus the manufacturer thought ahead and included a top to keep the dispensing tip clean and safe.

I used the serum that is more like a cream in texture when it comes out but once you start distributing the product, it disappears. You sort of get a sheen from the moisturizers but no white film left behind. I gave it a good 5 minutes before applying any make-up to make sure the product did not interfere. Moisture was something that you feel quickly and actually see on first use. Within 15 minutes, you will see a surface that is nourished and sort of plumped up by the moisture delivered. I felt my skin and you feel a little bit of tack when you leave the skin make-up free, but nothing that is oily or sticky. I used the eye serum for 3.5 weeks and while I did not see any reversing effects when it came to fine lines, I did see diminishing in appearance due to the high moisture level. I also liked that the product did not pill up when I applied make-up and/or hours later cause a sheen that changed my foundation’s texture. The serum played well with all the other products I use and who doesn’t like that!

Retail Price Point: $27.87 via Amazon for the eye serum and wand combo.  The manufacturer also offers a satisfaction guarantee.

  • Swiss Ultimate Labs Sonic-Infusion Wand:

I underestimated what a wand and the right vibrations can do. My previous wand would vibrate but the wand from Swiss Ultimate Lab is more finely calibrated. You get a fine pulse and vibrations that are fast and in short successions. It’s not hurtful like my other wand was, where on my cheek bones it caused discomfort and sometimes a slight bruise if it skipped off. The Swiss Ultimate Lab wand does none of that. It’s kind to the skin and what I like best, when it comes off (stops contacting with your skin), it stops vibrating. That ceasing of movement when it does not have pressure from the surface is what makes sure boo-boos don’t happen. My other one had a on and off switch and I had to constantly click it on and off at the sides to save my battery, add moisturizer, distribute product, and so forth. I stop and the Sonic-Infusion wand works with me and stops too. The wand is what I felt made the product and any eye product you use work better. Wands of this kind help the production of collagen by pushing water up. I did not believe this claim before until I read this and when I got surgery on my leg, a plastic surgeon stated that the act of rubbing/massaging will make all the difference to my 3 month old scar. I started rubbing and massaging and it definitely started to diminish the appearance of my scar in 2 weeks time. It reduced the redness and perma-bruising that was left from the surgery and in no time I was just left with a semi-visible scar but not an ugly looking one like before. After getting this know how, I wanted a wand again and the one by Sonic-Infusion is perfect for the eye area because it’s compact and delivers just enough pulse to do the job. You will see within 30 seconds how the serum and or cream you use disappears and it’s not because it transferred to the tip on the wand. I checked and it was not there, it had been absorbed with just enough left to leave a protective barrier.

IMAG2882

Final Verdict:

I think Swiss Ultimate Labs offers a combo kit that is easy to use and satisfies your skincare needs.  It’s simple and kind in both ingredients used for the eye serum and the wand delivers the right amount of pressure, vibrations and increases absorption, while easing  distribution.  If you have early signs of again like fine lines but not deep wrinkles, you will notice a difference and realize I have used the product for a short period of 3.5 weeks.  The company has a reasonable guarantee period of 90-days and I noticed a moisturizing effect quite rapidly.  I like using the serum and feel it satisfies my needs.  You can always add a retinol product for night use and boost up the turn-over effects but for being an eye cream, I enjoyed not having a toxic combo near my eyes and it was light enough to keep me using it.

Petunia Skincare: Derma Roller, 540 needles 1.5mm #Review #PetuniaSkincare

IMAG2643

I have come to the conclusion that not everything for skincare today comes out of a jar. Yes, you get results but not the maximum you can achieve from an at-home beauty regimen. Something is always missing and because I’m a D-I-Y gal, I try to find options that fit with my schedule and no appointments required.  So, if I have time at midnight to take care of my skin……so be it!

Petunia Skincare provides several beauty products that fit anyone’s needs from cosmetic brushes, serums, to the Derma roller they sent me. I have used at-home laser treatments that really helped to facial skin simulators, which helped me clear up my nasal passages from the vibrations more than it ever did anything for my skin, so it was great for my seasonal allergies! I never actually have used needles (except to annihilate a pimple that declared war and that is a needle) on my face. Petunia’s Skincare Derma roller is 540 needles that are ultra thin at just 1.5 mm!

IMAG2539

What do Derma Rollers Deliver:

The idea is to stimulate the skin with multiple micro-sized needles. The stimulation is deeper than a product you would just apply to the surface, so you wake-up (i.e. amp up) your production of collagen. Collagen is what we lose with time when it comes to the amount we produce, so the effect of aging accelerates. No one wants that! You won’t get rid of deep wrinkles but you can soften their appearance with time and start working at producing a skin surface that is smoother and softer. Works wonders on fine lines that are not so deep!  The stimulation also aids with circulation, which again aids with the rejuvenation process. It’s about making that clock for once speed up on how we shed old skin to produce new skin that is better looking than what we had. I’m game!

IMAG2540

How you Use it Matters:

It’s needles and common sense applies. You don’t roll it around like it’s a pie crust here! Think more of pasta dough and you need to follow a pattern, so you are not over rolling in certain areas and neglecting others. The Derma roller can be used on your face and body, however you avoid sensitive skin like under your eyes, lids, and so forth. After using the Derma roller, it is recommended to “feed your skin”, so this is when you use serums, creams and anything that provides a good dose of nourishment to the areas you treated. It’s easy when it comes to the regimen aspect because you only use the roller once every 3 to 4 weeks for the face and 2 to 3 weeks on the body. Petunia Skincare provides a nice illustration and detailed directions when it comes to patterns and use, so you are not going into it blind when you purchase a Derma Roller from them. If you have open skin from acne or other causes, avoid treating that area or if you develop a negative reaction. Redness will occur and I compare the redness I got to what I get from retinol, so it fades away overnight.

IMAG2541

Retail Price Point: $18.77 via Petunia Skincare’s website or via Amazon.  The product also comes with a Satisfaction Guarantee.

IMAG2542

Cleaning keeps the skin Healthy:

Like our skin, the Derma roller should be kept clean and sterile to avoid any issues. Petunia Skincare recommends a hot water rinse before every use and an alcohol/bleach disinfection after 3 to 4 sessions of use. I opted to keep things ultra-clean by using alcohol every time. Takes so little time and my skin is worth it! I did use the (diluted) bleach method after using the roller twice and when you look at the schedule for treatments, it broke down to once every 2 months for the bleach method and that was already ahead of the 3 to 4 sessions recommended by the manufacture. Be careful to not damage the needles by bending or pressing on them when cleaning the Derma roller.

IMAG2543

Results:

I’m 2 sessions in when using the roller and have noticed a quicker turnaround. The product’s box states the roller aids with cellulite reduction, however I have just used the product on my face and can’t report if it helps with this skin problem. I figure I start using it on my problem areas (on my body) this month. Being able to accelerate the “turn-over process” has drastically reduced my punishment regarding acne scarring, which has always gone away with me but what took maybe 2 months to diminish, now takes 3 to 4 weeks and the last week is really just a shadow (pigment color difference) that you can barely notice. So far 2015 has been kind to me when it comes to my breakouts, so unsure if that is due to the roller or my skin just decided to be nice (nah, it’s out of character) to me. You will notice firmer texture after 2 sessions if this was not a huge issue. Start early when it comes to beauty treatments has always been my motto and this is coming from a girl that never has seen a dermatologist for anti-aging anything. It pays off because I don’t mind needles but I am sort of wary of filled needles because of the adverse effects fillers and botox may have. Plus, I save money and my wallet and myself sort of prefer walking around looking a little younger minus less money!
