When it comes to dog food, my dog is usually great about consuming the dry kind but will sometimes wait us out in case I add any extra protein to enhance her meal. I try to always add a little extra chicken and have switched her foods to grain free formulas that seem to be more easily digested. She eats less and remains a healthy weight at the age of 13. Like humans, she gets bored eating the same flavors day after day and I notice she loses interest, so we developed “mix-ins”, pretty much something from fish (she loves Tilapia) to meats and even sometimes a spoonful of sweet potatoes. Keeps the dog interested in her food and I feel less guilty for serving her “dry cereal”, which is what we call her dog food.

In comes Purina One, with a new grain-free formula added to their line called SmartBlend, which they added the title “True Instinct” to the blend. What is True Instinct? It’s what I call adding marshmallows to the dry cereal and these bits are what the dogs go crazy over. The jerky style bits have a different texture and not only enhance the meal, but deliver more real meat to the grain-free base. You also have other positive differences like using Turkey as the first meat ingredient, versus chicken like other blends of this kind. A Glucosamine supplement has been added to the food and I look for this, especially with a dog that some have referred to as a Senior or the golden word one Vet Tech called her, Geriatric. Don’t tell our dog this because she is as active as she has always been from spending days getting in out of the pool, jumping, wrestling, to out running anyone who tries to race her (always has to be first through the door). Purina One’s Smartblend also has added Omega-6 Fatty Acids to keep our pet’s fur shiny and healthy, along with an Antioxidant Blend, which includes Vitamin A and Vitamin E. It’s finally a dog food that you feel good about feeding your pet.

Verdict:
So, why did I call the bits of jerky-style meats marshmallows before? It’s not for health reasons, but my dog turns out to be the dog that eats all the “marshmallows” out of the dog food first, leaving her “cereal” to eat last. That is how much she loves the new SmartBlend True Instinct formula from Purina One. The minute we pour the food, she starts nosing the food and you can hear her hunt for the chewy bits until she claims every last one of them. We purchased the Turkey and Venison blend and I even checked labels in the store. There is actual Venison and our dog loves this meat. From Duck to odd varieties like Swordfish, this dog is always eager for the wilder kind of meats. Our dog had surgery a little over a month ago and I thought I would have to worry about getting her to want to eat her normal dog food, but once I started mixing the Smartblend grain-free formula, that worry vaporized as did the food. She ate, gained back the 8 pounds she lost prior to having the surgery and it’s muscle mass she was able to regain. I was worried prior to surgery, as she lost muscle mass around the legs and neck area, to even going down a notch size on her collar. She was able to get that all back, plus we noticed she is full of energy to the point we are having a hard time keeping up with her. Our dog has us on a schedule now that she eats her dinner and then wants play, play, and more play. We actually get tired of playing tug-a-war with her and I now can’t even tug the plush away and run off like a bandit. I have to actually cheat and say, “let go or drop”, and then run with the plush but she always catches me! What you feed your pets really makes the difference and like reading labels for the food we eat ourselves, pick-up a bag of SmartBlend from Purina One and compare the True Instinct grain-free to the other brands. Fillers is not something this feed is full of and we saw the difference it made in our pet when she needed a good blend that not only she enjoyed eating, but aided in her recovery. Our little dog can be messy. We’re partially to blame for this, since we used to hide “nummers” under her kibble to entice her to eat what my Husband likes to call her “dry cereal”. And in the process, she’ll nose half the kibble out of her bowl because there just has to be something better at the bottom. We’d taken to putting a plastic party platter under her bowl to try to keep from crunching every time we walked into the garage. It was awkward, hard to clean, and probably should be tossed by now. But then Tip Top Petware offered me their Silicone Pet Food mat, and now all is right with the world.

Made from 100% food-grade non-slip silicone, it’s water proof, non-toxic, dishwasher safe, flexible and durable. It has a raised lip all around to help keep spills, both wet and dry, on the mat and off the floor. at 18.5″ by 11.5″ it’s big enough for both food and water bowls, and can be kept clean with a simple damp cloth or Clorox wipe. You can fold it up like a taco to pour “spilled” food back into the bowl where it belongs, and comes in four different colors: Black, grey, pink and red. It even has the most adorable little paw at the top corner.

I would advise future buyers to open it, wash it and let it air out a bit to lessen the silicone smell. Our pooch wouldn’t touch her bowl at first because the smells were all wrong, but that was our mistake, not a fault of Tip Top Petware. Now a month in and we wonder how we got along without it. At $18.95, it’s a little on the pricey side, but when you consider how much potential damage you’re preventing, what with the spills, drips, a scooting of bowls, it will probably pay for itself quite quickly.

Food recalls are, sadly, a fact of life. All manner of food-borne nastiness seems to be reported weekly. And our littlest, furriest friend’s foods are unfortunately not immune either. If you think buying a “premium” brand of dry kibble means you don’t have any worries, you’d be wrong. “So what’s to be done”, you may be asking? Well, one school of thought is feeding your pooch a “raw” diet, or cooking for them like the rest of your family, which is what AllProvide Dog Food thinks you should do too. Let’s look a little closer, shall we?

On the surface, it may feel a little strange cooking up something and dumping it into a dog dish. But I’ve been doing this, in one form or another, all my dog’s life. And at 13 years old, she still has the energy of a puppy. She still looks, acts and, it seems, feels, like a dog half her age. And I attribute that to only feeding her the best we could afford, and supplementing her kibble with real, honest, normal food. AllProvide’s meal packets are just that: Real food. Things you probably have in your fridge to eat yourself or cook later. Take this ingredient list from our pooch’s favorite meal from AllProvide: Beef and Vegatables:
Beef, Turkey with Bone, Beef Liver, Beef Kidney, Carrots, Butternut Squash, Broccoli, Green Kale, Small Red Beans(sprouted), Milled Flaxseed, Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil, Organic Coconut Oil, Dried Sea Kelp, Oregano Leaf, Organic Turmeric, Vitamin E Supplement
Not too shabby. In fact, I ate some of those things this morning and tonight for dinner! We cook the packet up, because let’s be honest, switching our girl up to a “raw” diet at 13 is not going to be good for her, us, or the carpet in her room. We then mix it in with about a cup of her Kirkland-brand grain-free kibble. And she’s so happy she’s wagging from the first bite to the last. Usually those kinds of wags are reserved for when we share a Costco rotisserie chicken with her, so that should tell you how much she’s loving AllProvide’s noms.

Our First-Time Starter box contained a whopping 8+ pounds of real, honest food. USDA Select cuts of beef, USDA Grade “A” poultry. Three 1lb packets each of Beef, turkey, and chicken, all mixed with fresh vegetables, vitamins, and herbs.Made in America using only human grade, restaurant quality ingredients. I had to actually convince hubby what I was cooking up wasn’t for us, but for the dog. What we did was mix a half packet into her usual mix of kibble, and let me tell you, it was appreciated immensely. And for the past few weeks, we’ve had a senior dog with more energy than we can handle, and a pup that’s looking forward to dinner all day. They even have puppy formulas, senior formulas, soy-free and gluten-free options for dogs with specialized diets. There’s something for every dog on their menu.

What I didn’t like was that if we wanted to continue, the minimum order is 12lbs of food, and that takes a lot of fridge/freezer space. But I think our dog is worth a little space in our appliances. There was a hiccup in our first delivery, in that it was accidentally shipped ground from Georgia. In the summer. Needless to say, what arrived wasn’t fit for man nor beast. Thankfully, AllProvide stood behind their product and reshipped it immediately, and made sure we were taken care of. That to me speaks worlds about how much they care for their customers, and their customer’s pets.

My dog eats like a cat!
No, not cat food but loves things that cat’s like when it comes to foods and even toys. I still don’t walk into the Pet Store where she found joy with that feather toy made for cats because to see a 55 pound dog playing with it made her the only thing people were staring at when all I did was come in for treats.
She also loves Salmon, Sword Fish and shrimps to crab so when this dog food, which was sent as part of BzzAgent campaign said Tuna and Egg…..it was made for her. She loves it and I love that she is happy and no feathers were hurt 🙂 The food is reasonably priced for being a “no grain” variety and that makes me love it more. I find she goes potty less, less gas, and just more pure energy that sometimes I miss the dog that thinks everyday is a lounge day. She plays more and that is worth it in my book, when you see results!

How Much to feed when it comes to to a no-grain food:

Actual Results:
I witnessed our dog getting a shiner coat that is not oily like with other feeds that have added fats that deliver shine, but leaves your poor pet so greasy that you cringe petting them. Our dog did get a slight fishy breath after eating her meal but not so bad and it did lessen as time passes. I noticed the energy level went up and we actually had to slow her down in these hot Summer days we have been experiencing but that usually means a dip in the pool for her. No stomach problems and eating grass is a thing she does not engage in as often as before, so I think her meals settle better. I recommend trying one bag for yourself and see the difference for yourself! A version for cats is also made so the kitties did not get left out on the fun 🙂

Our mutt is the type of dog that finds the cheapest toys the most fun to play with but when it comes to food, she is offended by the oddest of things. Actually gives me that face questioning if I am serious about her eating something she is particularly not fond of (at that second) and then comes the waiting game. I try to wait until she eats it and she waits until something else (better) is served. I have seen this dog eat a Flaming Hot Cheeto (extra hot edition), so she does not convince me she has some kind of “refined” palette after she ate that! I also find her liking raw carrots one day and not the next, so this is her plan to drive me crazy. I don’t appreciate how she acted like they were radiated and left me a exploded carrot by her dish as a sign of protest!
In comes Force, a dehydrated whole foods product by The Honest Kitchen. First thing that catches me eye, it states “Human Grade” on the package. Okay, I’m not even sure everything I eat is such a grade so this definitely is the dog one upping me! The flavor sounds more like a dish you order, Free-Range Chicken with Vegetables and Fruit (grain-free). Makes my all-beef hot dog I had for dinner not so special now, even though I opted for spicy brown mustard 🙂 You have other details like a Guaranteed Analysis disclosure, which let’s you know the crude protein, fat, fiber to even caloric count. The food is made in an FDA inspected facility! So, this is all good but does the Cheeto Bandit approve?

Simple Preparation:
I added Organic Low-Sodium beef broth I had left over from making stuffing to the dehydrated food. Think instant oatmeal for dogs when preparing this dish for your pet. The food actually smells like chicken and contains potatoes, celery, sweet potato, apples, organic alfalfa to even organic flax seed and herbs like basil and rosemary. You mix the package with 1/3 of a cup of warm water (foo-foo broth in my case), wait about 5 minutes and serve. The food absorbs the liquid and you do not even need to stir, so no need to walk in with the “dog’s spoon” that must be put in the dishwasher ASAP.
Mutt Approved:
I did the above and served it. The pooch inspected and sniffed and then wagged. If she wags while eating and looks back but continues eating, that means it’s a “Yay”. If she sniffs, looks back and then comes over and looks at your hands to see if you got anything else to offer the Dog Goddess, it’s a “Nay”. The goddess approved and I did not get my paws checked for other offerings. She ate it all and cleaned her bowl better than my dishwasher cleans that last glass in the corner!

I thought the idea of making my own wet food for my dog would be……well, icky but this is not only a Honest Kitchen product but a clean one. It’s simple and easier than making a cup of soup in the microwave, and that means no microwave is needed and no mixing required. She loved it and the ingredients are remarkable. Force loves their furry consumers more than some companies like us humans! You can also opt to serve the product alone or as a topper for their kibble, so you can skip on adding any liquid. I also like that 10 pounds of Force food makes 40 pounds of fresh food! Force products are also GMO free, Gluten free and produced in the USA by a family owned and operated business.
