Green Mountain Creamery: Yo Yummy Yogurt Pouches #Review and Cake #Recipe

IMAG0484 (1)

It should be no secret by now I’m a fan of yogurt. Big time. Going with my yogurt obsession, I recently received a wonderful parcel from Green Mountain Creamery. It was boxes filled with their Yo Yummy pouches, a product geared primarily towards kids. That does not mean an adult can’t indulge. We don’t have kids, and I have tried to like yogurt that comes in squeeze containers but most brands are watery, almost slimy in texture and then loaded with sugar. The last thing you taste is the fruit and I can see why some kids prefer these types of products in a frozen state. You at least can try to get past the texture problem but then again are left with a cube of frozen sugar and colors. Not Yo Yummy!

Yo Yummy, is finally a yogurt “pouch” product that can be squeezed out and still resembles what is suppose to be: delicious, creamy yogurt. Not filled with sugars and dyes, just flavorful yogurt.

Yo Yummy actually has 10% less sugar than the national leading brands and many benefits that separate this brand from others:

  • Gluten-Free
  • Added Vitamin A and Vitamin D
  • No Artificial Colors/dyes
  • No Artificial Flavors
  • No Preservatives
  • Good Source of Calcium
  • Kosher
  • Milk derived from Non-RBST treated cows
  • Made in Vermont, U.S.A.
  • and packed in a BPA free pouch

It’s R-E-A-L yogurt for everyone!

I looked into Green Mountain Creamery when I saw their yogurt cups at Sprout’s Market. The flavors were tempting and after I had just one cup of their Maple flavor….I was hooked!

Yo Yummy comes in 4 flavors for you to fall in love with and all are only 90 calories:

DSCN4598

Mixed Berry– A blend of actual real berries and not just a touch of it. You taste the full berry explosion of raspberry, blueberry, and Ssrawberry. The ingredients list these as purees and you really get that when you eat Yo Yummy. It’s a texture of yogurt where you still see the fruit, so each bite (or squeeze in this case) can taste different. We enjoyed this one greatly and I liked that I was left satisfied with just one pouch!

IMAG0485

Strawberry Banana– My Husband is not a banana eater (I know, how sad) but I squeezed this flavor until I ran out of pouches! I enjoyed it every morning over granola and when I found strawberries on sale, added banana slices to my granola…..oh my! I was in a Straw-nana heaven with this yogurt. This Yo Yummy blend is just like the others where they use real fruit purees and you taste it until you are squeezing every last drop out. I got good with my technique by day 3, in not letting one squeeze go to waste 🙂

IMAG0487

Strawberry– All I can say it tastes like you took fresh strawberries and just pureed them. That is the other thing, the freshness in their flavors have no match to what is on the market today. Yo Yummy uses premium products and fruit at their peak of freshness and taste because it transfers so well to your taste buds. Just like if you bit into a strawberry and yogurt parfait! Yes, you must make this one into a parfait. My Husband and I voted this flavor #1 and I admit I did not dive heavily into it because I wanted to leave it for him to enjoy. He enjoyed a pouch every morning until it was gone.

IMAG0486

Cotton Candy– I was skeptical because I like (not love) cotton candy but never had the flavor in yogurt form. Being that Green Mountain Creamery is wholesome and fills their yogurt cups and pouches with real fruit…..I wondered if there was a cotton candy bush I had no idea existed. I did not question the cotton candy’s bush existence after I had one taste of this pouch. Think of a sweet cream and almost a touch of strawberry when eating this flavor. There is a hint of sweetness but it does not overwhelm your palette so I decided to take this flavor a notch up by making a cake!  Yo Yummy will also be coming out soon with grape and sour cherry flavors. I can’t wait!

IMAG0691

Yup, let’s have fun and with this Spring weather, a happy cake can be made with the cotton candy flavor or any of the Yo Yummy pouches. Just 25-30 minutes in the oven and each pouch fills one ramekin. Only three ingredients needed, so let’s get started-

Yo Yummy Cotton Candy Speckled Cake (think confetti)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Get one small (individual size) ramekin (greased- you can use cooking spray or even Coconut Oil)

Ingredients:

  • 1 Yo Yummy Cotton Candy pouch
  • 1/8 of a cup of all-purpose flour (you can use Rice Flour if you wish)
  • 1 teaspoon of confetti sprinkles
  • 1 strawberry (if desired) and a dash of powder sugar for decor purposes 🙂

Take the Yo Yummy pouch and empty it into a bowl

IMAG0670

Add the flour and if you wish a fluffier cake, add a dash of baking soda (1/4 teaspoon)

IMAG0672

Mix

IMAG0673

Once incorporated, add the confetti sprinkles and mix quickly and then fill the greased ramekin.

Put ramekin in oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Check cake if done with toothpick and it will be dense like a pudding cake but a toothpick should come out clean when checking.

IMAG0679

Allow cake to cool (if you have patience) and you can personalize these as you wish. You can eat it as is or add a scoop of ice cream. I found fresh strawberries on sale an added one on top with a dusting of powder sugar. It’s a happy cake and each person can make their own to suit their taste buds. Try it with the other Yo Yummy flavors and even your own mix-ins. Enjoy!

Chobani Vanilla Golden Crunch Flip

Flipping back to Flip Country and I bring you Chobani’s Vanilla Golden Crunch Flip. Called a Flip because you flip nutritious “goodies” from one cup to the bigger yogurt cup. You can then decide if you want it to be a topper or a mix-in, or a little of both. I like that you have that choice of texture that is kept fresh by keeping the ingredients separate.

DSCN2847

Let’s break down the cups-
The yogurt portion, which is the larger cup, is Vanilla low-fat yogurt. The “flip” is a joyful mix of cornflakes, honey oats and praline pecans! I told you it was a happy cup but you did not believe me! You also have Wildflower Honey minus the bees because they don’t always give up the golden nectar without a fight. No small detail went overlooked and even barley malt is present. That’s the stuff the gives corn flakes and shakes that extra oh so good flavor.

The Verdict-
This Flip remains at 150 calories and only 15 from fat. Twelve grams of Protein to get you going and 15% in Calcium.

DSCN2848

The Flavor-
Don’t let the Vanilla fool you in thinking this is a dull cup…….think Parfait. You have the pudding and the “crunchies” as I call them, bring that pudding alive. Who wants a bowl of corn flakes and milk, now that’s a soggy bore because I have Praline Pecans and my flakes don’t go floppy! That just changed the whole bowl for me and mine may be square but with Flips now on the block, square is in. Where have you been? Oh, you better be at the store….no the dairy aisle not where boring-o milk is nearby the eggs. You don’t want to get me started on eggs now 🙂

The Ingredients-
Nonfat Yogurt (cultured Pasteurized Nonfat Milk, Live And Active Cultures: S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus And L. Casei), Oats, Evaporated Cane Juice, Milled Corn, Wildflower Honey, Sugar, Canola Oil, Pecans, Salt, Barley Malt, Vanilla Extract, Locust Bean Gum, Butter.

Chobani BITE Caramel with Pineapple Chunks

DSCN3114

Taking a Chobani Flip break and now we venture into Hawaii with Chobani’s Caramel with Pineapple Chunks. Aloha!! Sounds more like dessert but for me, I think of those days when I would melt caramel and dip fruits. This is an all-in-one so no fire required!

The bite takes a chomp at providing you with 8 grams of protein and nibbles at your waist at just 100 calories. I had to look twice because I don’t think Caramel and yummy at just 100 little calories but I get where the Bite has it’s place. Better than a cookie or an empty calorie snack.

The product is full of goodness too and not just pretending to be good. Chobani uses all natural flavors, sweeteners, and even dairy derived from cows that have not been treated with rBST. No preservatives, so the product tastes more like nature intended it to be and that is just perfect. You also get 3 types of Probiotics and live and active cultures.

Let’s Analyze the Cup-
I peel the cup and notice the yogurt has a soft caramel color, not too deep in hue and when you bring a spoon up from the deepness of the Bite, you see an avalanche of small bits that are Pineapple. No skimping on what the product states it is, so I like how this is starting.

DSCN3116

The Flavor-
You smell Caramel and a little tartness from the yogurt and at first bite, you feel a warmth in your mouth from the caramel hitting your palette. It is distinguishable in flavor and even though it’s pre-mixed, the fruit kept it’s Pineapple bite. This yogurt is one I have found I like to freeze. I put the cup whole in the freezer and just when it gets to a “soft serve” texture (20 minutes in our freezer), I peel my cup and enjoy a nice walk in the garden. It has that caramel and the freezer changes the texture by hardening the fruit a little but also taking the warmth away from the caramel. I see it as I went to a frozen yogurt shop that is located in my freezer. I saved gas!

Ingredients-
Lowfat Yogurt (cultured Pasteurized Nonfat Milk, Cream, Live And Active Cultures: S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus And L. Casei), Evaporated Cane Juice, Pineapple, Caramelized Sugar Syrup, Pectin, Caramel Color, Natural Flavor, Locust Bean Gum.

Chobani Key Lime Crumble Flip Greek Yogurt

So, where does our Chobani passport get stamped next? Think palm trees, sand, and waves crashing against the surf……..Florida, maybe. Okay, think P-I-E like Chobani’s Key Lime Crumble Flip. Called a Flip because you flip nutritious “goodies” from one cup to the bigger yogurt cup. You can then decide if you want it to be a topper or a mix-in, or a little of both. This version has a nice surprising crunch that I love.

DSCN3054

Let’s break down the cups-
The yogurt portion, which is the larger cup, is Keylime low-fat yogurt. The “flip” is a crumble that is made of the cutest and littlest white chips you have ever seen and crushed graham crackers.

The Verdict-
This Flip comes in at 180 calories and it is higher by just 30 calories from the usual 150, but so worth it. Eleven grams of protein so that caloric count stands up nicely when you count all the positives that fit in that yogurt cup. It does not stop there, you have Vitamin A, Vitamin C, plus some Calcium so your bones stay nice and strong when lifting that spoon from flip to mouth.

DSCN3055

The Flavor-
I must start by confessing that I have bought this version of Flip so many times that I lost count. Key Limes everywhere must have wanted posters up, so from now this review is in whisper-mode (shhhh!). Think of a deconstructed Key Lime pie. The yogurt has a tang and it tastes just like Key Limes, no funny stuff of a Lime holding a key and pretending to be a Key Lime. The tang goes so well with the creamy texture of the Greek yogurt that I call it the pie filling. Then the pie…..I mean this healthy yogurt…has a crumble made of graham crackers, that is sweet from just a touch of brown sugar but has a hint of cinnamon. Made with love and it continues with the sweetest and smallest white chocolate chips that I have ever seen. They are smaller than the miniature morsels you can bake with but the cup is filled with them. I always take one out and smile but never fall for their high cuteness level, so it gets eaten. It’s the only way the white chocolate chip can’t control me, even though I now realize I am out of my Key Lime Crumble and I’m craving some yogurt pie 🙂
The Ingredients-
Lowfat Yogurt (cultured Pasteurized Nonfat Milk, Cream, Live And Active Cultures: S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus And L. Casei), Evaporated Cane Juice, Wheat Flour, Sugar, Brown Sugar, Soybean Oil, Key Lime Puree, Cocoa Butter, Whole Wheat Flour, Key Lime Juice Concentrate, Milk, Key Lime Peel, Honey, Nonfat Dry Milk, Natural Flavors, Salt, Cinnamon, Fruit Juice Concentrate (for Color), Turmeric (for Color).

Chobani Honey Bee Nana Flip Greek Yogurt

DSCN2797

Back to continue the Chobani voyage of flavors, so I bring you the latest try and that is Chobani’s Honey Bee Nana Flip. Called a Flip because you flip nutritious “goodies” from one cup to the other cup. You can then decide if you want it to be a topper or a mix-in, or a little of both. I like that you have that choice of texture that is kept fresh by keeping the ingredients separate.

Let’s break down the cups-
The yogurt portion, which is the larger cup,  is clover honey flavored low-fat yogurt. The “flip” is made of bananas and what could be a touch of honey to sweeten the deal.

DSCN2798

The Verdict-
I like that the yogurt provides a healthy 5.3 ounce serving so great for a snack or even breakfast. Only 150 calories, so in my book zero punishment because I can always welcome yogurt at anytime of the day. Three types of probiotics so Chobani has packed not only twice the protein but used quality ingredients.

DSCN2800

The Flavor-
My least favorite of the Flip bunch I have tried and it’s mostly a texture and flavor related issue. Would I buy it if no other Flip was in stock? Yes, but would prefer to hunt for others first. The puree that makes up the banana is sort of baby food like in texture and because it’s soft and wet, it tends to water down the yogurt making it a little soupy/loose for my liking. The flavor also does not have the banana punch I expected from a banana yogurt. You taste honey sweetness but not much fruit and this may be because the puree is getting so lost and everything is dissolving a little too down.  Now, I’m super tempted to purchase this again but maybe bring a fresh banana to the party so I can get that nanner power I want in the flavor department, and this would solve the texture issues.

The Ingredients-
Lowfat Yogurt (cultured Pasteurized Nonfat Milk, Cream, Live And Active Cultures: S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus, L. Casei), Bananas, Evaporated Cane Juice, Clover Honey, Pectin, Locust Bean Gum, Natural Flavors, Turmeric (for Color).
