While I am a fan of and can appreciate a good protein powder, Hubby is the real “house expert” here, so I will again defer to him for this coming review, Summit Nutritions Instantized Whey Protein Isolate Powder in natural dutch chocolate. Take it away, Hubby:

I’ve tried more than a few protein powders, and mostly through much trial and error have found out what works best for me and my exercise routines. Summit Nutritions has made a very decent Isolate product that can stand on it’s own with the likes of BSN, Muscle Pharm, and Optimum Nutrition. A little bit about this product and others like it. All whey proteins are not created alike. All protein powders aren’t created alike either. Whey is created by separating the components of milk. The differences between concentrate, isolate, and hydrolysate. The differences between the three are the purity of protein, available protein by weight, and the purest forms can be virtually lactose free, carbohydrate free, fat free, and cholesterol free. Whey proteins are quickly absorbed, have a high amout of BCAAs, and lately, the better ones can be very expensive. Isolates especially. To find a good isolate powder, that isn’t spiked, and tastes good is a tricky endeavor. “Spiked” powder is pretty cheap and unfortunately pretty common. The practice of spiking protein powders with certain amino acids and other substances to artificially boost the protein count. Brands like Body Fortress are notorious for this, and are actually being sued in a class action because of it.

Summit Nutritions isn’t playing that game. Just whey protein isolates, some natural flavors, sweeteners, cocoa powder, and some thickener. And for it’s minimal ingredient list, it tastes pretty dang good. A little on the sweet side, but for anyone who’s tried “unflavored” whey proteins knows that the sweetness is much better than the alternative. No sugars, no cholesterol, minimal carbs and practically no fat. It mixes well, leaves no clumps, and actually tastes
better than my usual isolate product. It’s premeasured in 30g individual pouches, and one can easily add your BCAA powders or creatine with minimal effect on the taste and consistency of the shake. I use these powders for my post-workout shake, but I can see this being an occasional meal replacement shake too. Be it a quick liquid breakfast or a liquid lunch on the run. The sealed single serve packages lend themselves to quick and easy mixing that you can do anywhere, anytime with just a half bottle of water. If not for one glaring thing, I could see this becoming my go-to powder for regular use.
That o
ne thing is price. At $8 for 3 servings, you’re looking at almost $200 to match the leading brand’s 74 serving tubs of concentrate, or $133 to match the leading brand’s 50-serving isolate tub. That’s prohibitively expensive. I’m not sure I’d pay an additional $80 for the convenience of pre-measured powder to mix on the go. Currently, the company sells a package of 3 single serving pouches at $7.99, 2lb tubs at $36.99 and 5lb tubs for $69.99. That’s still pretty expensive, more than one would spend for similar products of equal quality on Amazon, which is currently the only place Summit Nutrtions sells their protein powder. So while 3 days of mixes do not really give you enough of a sample size to see whether you get the usual benefits of a good post-workout whey isolate shake, it is enough to tell you it tastes good, smells good, mixes good, & seems to have everything you want in a protein powder, nothing you don’t.
Thanks, Hubby. I appreciate you being my designated sports nutrition testing try-out fella.

Protein powders aren’t just for gym rats anymore. Everyone has to go, go, go, and a meal on the run is always appreciated. I am always seeking the new and especially a different approach when it comes to supplements and fuel for your body. The protein bar world is dominated and oversaturated and you can finally find bars that are both good tasting and nutritious, but I wish I could say the same for the world of drinks. Even though they have been around longer than the bars, they have not been what I call mastered by all. Many are filled with….well, fillers and loaded with sugars and cheap sources of protein. Thanks to hubby I have had a chance to sample many different powders, with some being great tasting but not so good for you. Some were good for you and tasted AWFUL (**cough-Arbonne-cough**). Only a select few have balanced both well. I saw a post on The Underground on a new brand that I had not heard of and it’s not your common mix, so when ATH offered to send samples, I jumped on it.
ATH Sports is a Hawaii based company and their Hemp Gold is derived from cold-pressed Organic Hemp Protein seeds. The cold-pressed process helps keep their natural antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, plus the enzymes intact. I also love that when it comes to sugar, they use an all-natural source….coconut, stevia and Lo Han Fruit Extract, also known as the monk fruit. The Lo Han Fruit is 300 times sweeter than sugar and your body metabolizes it more effectively. The ingredient list in this protein supplement is short and all that it contains is what I noted above. Don’t be fooled by the short list because this is the power punch you get from ATH Sport’s Hemp Gold:
- 15 grams of protein
- 2000 mg of Omega-9 Fatty Acids
- 6400 mg of Omega-6
- 420 mg of Omega-3
- 18 grams of Fiber
- 10 essential Amino Acids
- Non-GMO
- No Sugar Added
- Gluten Free
- Organic Ingredients
All the above from just 1 scoop! Each 3 pound container yields about 57 servings and ATH’s scoop size is a mere 24 grams. Each serving is only 130 calories, 36 coming from fat. The THC has been removed so testing positive for anything bad is not a worry! Not bad so far but let’s get to the taste test.
Taste Test:
The powder does not fight back when you try to dissolve it and you do smell the Organic Coconut notes, think almost a earthy scent when undissolved. It actually smells good and inviting, so far so good. I mix it and the color of the powder is deceiving, it is like a mustard-green but don’t be fooled……this tastes so good that you can’t believe it’s a protein drink. It’s like no other, no bad after-taste, no needing to chug it, no particles in the water that remain undissolved…..you actually are left with a Coconut butter taste that is better than any Coconut Water I have ever had!!! I’m a fan and can say of all the shakes, mixes, smoothies, the ATH Sports Hemp Gold should be an example to other brands, healthy, natural nutrition drinks can taste freaking awesome!

I can easily state that from all the subscription boxes that are food related…..this one is the most packed!
Urthbox is a company which fills their subscription boxes with healthy, not-your-average treats and snacks. Stocking their box with only non-GMO foods makes this company stand out above all the rest. They also have boxes that fit every dietary need from vegan, gluten-free and even “diet” options. Munching diet related products is a great way to know what works, what you like to even what you want to continue purchasing. Urthbox also has boxes to fit every budget starting from $19 (7-10 items), medium sized box for $29 (12-15 products), to the large box that makes you a super happy snacker at $49 (20-24 items). I received the “Part-Time Snacker” box in size medium. I received 12 products from different manufacturers but the quantity was larger because some products came in counts of 2 or even 3. I liked that they count your products by individual kinds versus counting that they added 2 items of one product and using that towards the full count. Very fair and generous of UrthBox. I also want to add that shipping is free, so the above price points are with shipping included.
Let’s get started because I have so much to cover….I will be using the 1 to 5 point system where 5 is superb in taste/flavor and texture, and where 1 is pretty much saying don’t put it in your mouth 🙂

- Snap Pea Crisps (One .75 ounce package): I have seen these being sampled at Costco but never actually stood in line to try one. It’s pretty much Green Peas that are lightly salted and baked. A healthier way to snack because you get less fat than potato chips but this treat also is a good source of fiber. I love peas of any kind so I am biased on this one. I did like the texture but was not super fond of the aftertaste. It was not pleasant and left my mouth lacking moisture but now I know to pass versus buying on these. I give them a 2

- Hemp Hearts (Two 0.5 ounce packages): I have tested these before and enjoy them very much. You can read my full detailed review here- http://wp.me/p2B5Rd-fP and I give these a 5

- Viana Mild Jumbo Veggie Snack Sausage (Two 1.76 ounce packages): I received the Traditional German Smokehouse variety and have never tasted a non-meat sausage. I first loved how it smelled because that is my first test before taking a bite. The smell was spicy and very inviting. I take a bite and must say that flavor is not missing and you get a nice smoky taste with a wonderful blend of spices. Being a meat-eater, I can say if you told me it was turkey or chicken based….I would be none the wiser. It’s organic and you get a generous 13 grams of soy based protein with only 130 calories. It’s up there with a cup of yogurt and only 360 mg of sodium and 2 grams of sugar. It fills you up in a more satisfying way and I would purchase this item again. I give this product a 4

- Salba Chia Boost (Two 0.5 ounce packages): Advertised as not your usual chia seed and something I would have overlooked because I have had bad chia seeds. I did not think qualities changed so drastically and because I sorted on value when first buying them, I first purchased a bag of great quality seeds. I then go and repurchase the chia seeds but decided to pick-up a cheaper brand……big mistake. There was such an off taste that eating them in a wet or dry method did not save me. I ended up discarding them so there went my savings turning into waste. I can say that Salba does have a premium product and I also enjoyed that these come in ground (powder) form, something that was new to me. I mix it with my flax seeds and they are a treat with a nutritional punch. I give this item a 5

- Kelapo Extra Virgin Coconut oil (One 0.5 ounce package): The Coconut oil is cold pressed and unrefined. Love that it’s Fair Trade certified and Organic. I have become a fan of the coconut and it’s oil, to the point I cook with it and even purchase a butter and coconut oil spread that makes great grilled cheese sandwiches, even to just being used on bread. The Kelapo package states to warm in hands, tear and squeeze. Like many cooking oils, not all are equal and I put Kelapo in the higher grade when it comes to standards, texture and flavor. This is why I love these subscription boxes…..I became a fan of a new brand and give this oil a 5

- Shelton’s Smoked Snack Stick (One 1.0 ounce package): The sausage stick came in jalapeno flavor and is turkey based. Shelton’s products use turkey that is antibiotic free and the ingredient list was rather short. You have the turkey, jalapeno peppers, water, salt, encapsulated lactic acid, celery juice, red pepper, black pepper, granulated garlic, coriander and the blend is stuffed in a beef collagen casing Pretty simple and as natural as you can get when it comes to the sausage world. The product has a nice texture and spice content. You pick up the flavor of the peppers and I loved that it was not greasy or fatty like other sausages of this kind. I give this product a 4

- Neo Water (One 16.9 ounce bottle): Neo is a “Superwater” and it’s super-ness comes with the triple the benefits that come with this drink. You get water and added minerals for flavor, but also alkaline, has electrolytes and antioxidants. The water has a crisp and refreshing flavor and it’s definitely noticed when drinking. It tastes cleaner and I like the added benefits. I give this bottle a 5

- Spatone Pur Absorb Iron (3 0.67 fluid ounce packages): Okay, I never thought of drinking iron and I’m the type that usually tries to get mine from vegetables and meat. You get 5 mg of iron per package and the contents are listed as iron-rich natural spring water. Now, I’m more curious and my first thought was, “please don’t taste like iron”. I taste it as-is and I will say the package suggests adding it to a fruit based juice or just more water. It does not smell strong but my nose must be stuffy because the taste was very unpleasant. Strong notes of metal and almost a fishy finish. I drank plain water trying to wash the unpleasant taste and I would think I was free from it for it to just creep back. The very unfavorable notes were stuck in the back of my teeth and in my throat, it took several sips to just diliute it enough so it would not give me a “sicky-feeling”. Again, why would someone want to drink their iron like this is something I thought before tasting and was reinforced after tasting. I give this product a 1 but wishing my scale had a 0

- Licious Organics Honey Cookies (One 1 ounce cookie): Let’s move on from the iron disaster and onto cookies…much nicer. I received the cranberry almond variety and this is an unbaked cookie. You have finely crushed oats, coconut, almonds and raw honey, plus cranberries and sunflower seeds. You also have sunflower oil, Utah pink salt, cinnamon, vanilla and lemon juice. The cookie is also wheat free and 130 calories per small cookie. I can say it tastes unbaked and even though dates are not mentioned, the pulverized texture makes you think of them of date bars. This cookie saved me from the iron so I am grateful! The texture and puck shaped cookie makes it……well un-cookie like. This is more like a nutrition bar shaped like a disc but when I looked at the protein and nutrition facts, I can see why it’s called a cookie. Not bad if you have it right there but would not crave it or seek it out. I give the faux cookie a 2

- Beanfield’s Bean & Rice Chips (One 1.5 ounce bag): I was fortunate to review the entire selection offered by the Beanfield’s company and today I still purchase and eat their chips. I received the pico de gallo flavor and please read my detailed review here-http://wp.me/p2B5Rd-n2 . You will enjoy these very flavorful chips and I give this tasty chip a 5

- Eco-Dent Oral Care (3 packets): This is a company that makes natural based products for oral care. I received 1 packed of dental gum, 1 packet of the daily rinse and 1 packet of tooth powder that substitutes as toothpaste. Eco-Dent has a full line of dental hygiene products to fulfill your dental needs. The products tasted actually rather nice and they all had a mint-based flavor. The company included a 10% off coupon, plus a nice informative pamphlet about what makes their products premium and natural. They even stand behind their products with a money-back guarantee! I’m addicted to keeping my teeth white and while I did like these items, they just did not fit my individual needs. Yes, Baking Soda whitens but in my experience not as quick and fast as the products I currently use. These products perform as advertised and I give these products a 4

- CalNaturalle Svelte Organic Protein Shake (One 11 Fluid Ounce container): I skip on drinking protein shakes or smoothies and I must be honest on why, I’m lazy about washing my non-dishwasher safe shaker bottle. Yes, it comes down to that but it’s the honest truth. I then think of buying one that is dishwasher safe but no point if you need it the following day so I made a simple purchase complicate. Only me! In comes Svelte making sure to clear away my laziness by having their shake come in their own bottle. I just shake, open and drink. My flavor came in French vanilla and is sweetened with stevia. All organic products and the protein shake is soymilk based, giving you 11 grams of protein. It tasted pretty good for being a vanilla flavor and I drank half and then put it in the freezer for it to freeze just enough to make it taste like a shake….20 minutes top. Then I loved it so I give this product a 4
- So, let’s rate my UrthBox and I give the service, size of box and items included a fairly deserved 4.5 and 5 if you find a discount code…..wait, I found one. Use code 5XU83J and you get a $10 Gift Card towards your first order. Code expires on 5/30/2014.

I recently had a chance to try a few different products from the Arbonne Essentials. I thought I’d share my experiences with you.
The first product I tried was the Arbonne Protein Shake Mix. I will say that, thanks to Hubby, I have been able to try a wealth of different protein powder shakes from almost every major brand out there. So he was my “taste buddy” on this little trial run as well.
A few things about Arbonne Essentials before we go any further. They strive to “keep it simple”, keep it healthy, and to make “good for you” products that are free from artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, cholesterol, trans fats, and 100% animal product free. These are vegan products, and they take that seriously. They have a very comprehensive line of products to address a multitude of needs.
So, back to the shake. I got to try chocolate (Our favorite flavor for EVERYTHING!) and vanilla. We tried to read on the package what the ingredients were, what the nutritional breakdown was, stuff like that. Nothing to really be found. Okay. Let’s look at the pamphlet that came with it. That tells me that it’s “pea protein” blend, 20 grams of it. It’s gluten free. It has coenzyme Q10, alfalfa, ginseng, and flax seed. Unless that doubles as an ingredient list, I have no idea what else is in there. That’s a little…frustrating. I tear into it and I’m immediately hit with a smell that I most closely identify with….latex paint?!? That can’t be right. We dip our respective fingers in and give the dry power a little taste. “Not chocolate” says Hubby. There’s a very strong vegetable flavor that immediately overpowers any hint of chocolate that might be there. Okay, well, it’s dry. You’re not supposed to taste it dry, so let’s add the requisite water and let the flavors bloom. I notice right away there’s A LOT of powder. Hubby’s go-to protein powder has been Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Whey powder, and for comparison purposes, it’s a much smaller scoop. He has a few different shaker bottles, so we select his best big one and give it the old “30-second shake up”. There’s chunks of goo everywhere. So Hubby shakes some more, and with great vigor this time. No luck. It’s a chunky mess. Well, sometimes it helps to sit in the fridge a bit and let the particles super-saturate and help the process. So sit it shall.

After an hour, we take it out, noticing that it’s started to separate a bit, but after a couple of shakes it’s still kinda gloopy. Hubby gamely offers that he’s “had worse” and goes in for a taste. He immediately tells me it’s got a very chalk-like consistency and it’s kinda gritty. There’s a very strong veggie taste, even pepper-ish, and the aftertaste that remained as “horrible”. The smell is still off, but I will myself to give it a go and I regret it almost immediately. He’s right, something is off. I really can’t taste any chocolate, but it’s closer to a malted V8. Hubby gamely goes back for more, and after 3 sips, he says he can’t finish it. Just so you know, I’ve seen this man chug things that would choke a billy goat, all in the name of fitness. For him to tell me he can’t finish is shocking to me. I open up the vanilla and smell the same “latex paint” smell from before and I’m not even going to torture ourselves and go through this again. I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t even mix it.
I have to wonder if there was something off about the samples I received. For company to be so high on their products that they send out samples like this tells me there must be something there, and hopefully this was just an anomaly.
I also got a chance to try their Energy Fizz Sticks, but that is for another post! =D
I received the above products free of charge from a Arbonne representative. I am not obligated in providing a positive/favorable review, just my honest opinion. My review is based on my experience with the brand and/or product, which may differ from yours.
